The so-called Women of Venice is a group of 15 sculptures Giacometti created in 1956 in preparation for the Venice Biennale. The basic motive remained the same: the women for Venice are all female nudes with adjacent arms. They are distinguished by the pointed foot sections. They seem to merge with the base on which they stand. This massive emphasis of the substructure is in contrast to the spherical small-looking women-heads. The adjoining sculpture is a tribute to the “Woman of Venice IV”.
